Anthropic launches Cowork, a Claude Desktop agent that works in your files — no coding required
Category: Artificial Intelligence / Generative AI
The development of Cowork was reportedly inspired by Anthropic observing developers using Claude Code, originally a terminal-based programming tool, for a wide range of non-coding activities such as vacation research, building slide decks, and organizing files. Recognizing this “shadow usage,” Anthropic developed Cowork to provide a simplified, accessible interface. The agent operates by gaining access to a designated folder on a user’s local machine, where it can read, modify, and create files to complete tasks like generating expense reports from receipts or drafting documents from scattered notes. This functionality leverages an “agentic loop,” enabling Claude to formulate plans, execute steps, check its own work, and seek clarification as needed.
Remarkably, Cowork was reportedly built in approximately a week and a half, with speculation suggesting a significant portion was developed using Claude Code itself, highlighting a recursive feedback loop in AI development. The tool also integrates with Anthropic’s existing ecosystem of connectors for services like Asana and Notion, and can perform browser automation via the Claude in Chrome extension. Anthropic has also introduced specific “skills” for Cowork to enhance its document and presentation creation abilities.
Despite its capabilities, Anthropic has proactively warned users about potential risks, including the agent’s ability to take destructive actions like deleting files if instructed, or misinterpreting commands. The company also highlighted the ongoing industry challenge of prompt injection attacks, where malicious instructions could bypass safeguards. This transparent approach underscores the inherent challenges of deploying advanced AI agents, while placing Cowork in direct competition with Microsoft’s Copilot, offering a sandboxed, folder-centric alternative to OS-level AI integration.
Currently exclusive to Claude Max subscribers on macOS, Anthropic plans to expand Cowork’s availability to Windows and other platforms in the future, with features like cross-device sync. Described as “early and raw,” Cowork represents a significant step in making AI agents practical for mainstream use, though its success will depend on user trust in delegating sensitive file management to an AI.
